Use your Facebook account on Meta Quest

Create a Facebook account to use with your Meta Quest device

If you are new to Meta, or using Meta Quest 2, a Facebook account is required to use your device, apps and the Oculus store. If you don’t already have a Facebook account, you can create one using the Oculus app.

To create a Facebook account using the Oculus app:

  1. Open the Oculus app on a compatible mobile device. You can download the Oculus app from the App Store or Google Play store.
  2. Tap Sign Up at the bottom of the screen.
  3. When you create your Facebook account, enter the name you use in real life (you will be able to choose whether you display that name to others in VR).
  4. After creating a Facebook account, you'll be able to create a unique VR profile — so you might be Monique Smith on Facebook, but WarriorMama365 in VR.

During the initial setup, you can also adjust your privacy settings, including whether or not people can see your Facebook name on Meta Quest. You can change your privacy settings at any time in the Oculus app. Learn more about your privacy on Meta Quest.

If you’re looking for additional help in setting up or using your Meta Quest device, please contact Meta Store support.

Facebook account requirements for Meta Quest devices

For Meta Quest 2:

  • Meta Quest 2 requires everyone to use a Facebook account to log in.
  • If you are an existing Oculus user and have an Oculus account, you will have the option to log in with your Oculus account and merge your Facebook and Oculus accounts.
  • When you log in with a Facebook account, you can still create or keep your VR profile. So you might be Monique Smith on Facebook, but WarriorMama365 in VR.

For previous generation devices, including Meta Quest, Rift S, Rift, Go, and Samsung Gear VR:

  • Everyone using a previous generation Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.
  • If you are an existing Oculus user and have an Oculus account, you will have the option to log in with your Oculus account and merge your Facebook and Oculus accounts. You can also choose not to merge your accounts and continue using your Oculus account for two years.
  • You can continue using your Oculus account until January 2023, but you will not have access to social and some new and updated features. After that, full functionality will require a Facebook account.

I've already logged into my Oculus device using Facebook. What changed?

Previously, if you connected your Oculus and Facebook accounts you could later choose to disconnect them. When you disconnected your accounts you would lose access to Facebook-powered social features and go back to having two separate accounts, one for Oculus and one for Facebook.

Now, if you merge your Oculus account and your Facebook account, you won’t be able to unmerge them. Once you merge the accounts, you’ll only be able to log into your Oculus devices with your Facebook account. You'll still have access to the same apps, games and Facebook-powered social VR features that you did before.

I already have a Facebook account. Can I create a new Facebook account just for use with Meta Quest?

No— Facebook is a community where everyone uses the name they go by in everyday life, so you always know who you're connecting with.

We know that people want to control how they show up in VR and that having a distinct VR username and friends separate from your Facebook profile is important. You can still have a unique VR profile— so you might be Monique Smith on Facebook, but WarriorMama365 in VR. And if you don’t want people to find you by your Facebook name, they won’t— just make it visible to ‘Only Me’ in your settings.

I want to use a name different from my legal name for my Facebook account.

Facebook is a community where everyone uses the name they go by in everyday life, so you always know who you're connecting with. If you need to change your name on Facebook, we have a form available in our Help Center. Learn more about what names are allowed on Facebook.

VR is a new type of environment and we’ve heard from our community that being able to have a distinct VR username and separate friends is important. This isn’t changing. You can still create or maintain a unique VR profile — so you might be Monique Smith on Facebook, but WarriorMama365 in VR.

If you don’t want your Oculus friends to find you by your Facebook name, you can adjust your privacy settings — just set Who will see your Facebook name on Oculus? to Only Me. You can also control who can see your activity on Oculus and who can see who your friends are on Oculus by adjusting your privacy settings.

What happens to my data when I log into an Oculus device with my Facebook account?

When you log into your Oculus device with your Facebook account or merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts, we'll use information related to your use of Oculus and Facebook for purposes such as:

  • Providing and improving your experience across Facebook products.
  • Promoting safety and integrity on our services.
  • Showing you personalized content, including ads, across Facebook products. This could include recommendations for Oculus Events you might like, ads about Facebook apps and technologies, or ads from developers for their VR apps.

Examples of the information we use include:

  • The VR apps you use, so we can recommend new apps you haven’t tried yet.

  • Your Facebook friend list, to make it easier to find and interact with your Facebook friends who are also in VR.
  • Invites and acceptances for events you create.
  • Information like your name and messaging metadata for chats in VR, so that you have access to your chats across devices.
  • Your photos and related content like captions, likes and comments if you share photos from VR to Facebook.
  • Information about your VR activity, like which apps you use, to show you ads for other VR apps you may like.
  • Information about your activity on other Facebook products, such as Pages you like and groups you join, to recommend content and things to do in VR.

Why are you requiring Facebook accounts to use Oculus devices?

Oculus is owned by Facebook and is one of Facebook’s apps and technologies. Using a Facebook account provides a single way to log into Oculus devices and makes it easier to find, connect and play with friends in VR. It also enables Facebook-powered social experiences, like live streaming gameplay to your Facebook timeline, making calls with parties, joining events, and exploring new experiences like Facebook Horizon. And as Facebook adds new privacy and safety tools, they can be added in VR too.

Yes. Facebook will use information related to your use of VR and other Facebook products to show you personalized content, including ads, across Facebook products. This could include recommendations for Oculus Events you might like, ads about Facebook apps and technologies, or ads from developers for their VR apps. Will my VR activity be posted to Facebook without my permission?

No. If you log into your Oculus device with your Facebook account, you can choose what information about your VR activity you post to your Facebook profile or timeline, either by giving permission to post or by updating your privacy settings. Fix a problem with your Facebook account on Meta Quest

I'm having trouble accessing my Facebook account. Can I still use my Meta device?

If you encounter problems with your Facebook account, we want to try to help you resolve them as quickly as possible.

  • If you have a temporary issue with your Facebook account after logging in to your Meta Quest device — for example if it uses a name that does not follow our policies — you'll still be able to use your device while you resolve the issue, so long as you remain logged in to your device and do not log out. If you're in this situation, you'll have the opportunity to fix or request a review of the issue when you log into Facebook.

  • Repeated or particularly serious violations of our Community Standards may lead you to lose access to your Facebook account, meaning you won't be able to log into your device using that account.

For additional help in setting up or using your Meta device, please contact Meta Store support.

If you're having trouble with a disabled Facebook account, learn more about why it happens and what it means. You may also be able to request a review if you feel that your account was disabled by mistake.

Merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts

What happens if I merge my Facebook and Oculus accounts?

If you merge your Facebook and Oculus accounts, you will no longer have a standalone Oculus account and will use your Facebook account to log into your Oculus device.

If you merge your Oculus account and your Facebook account, you won’t be able to unmerge them. Once your accounts are merged, you’ll use your Facebook login for Oculus, but you’ll still be able to create or maintain a distinct profile for VR experiences with a username you select.

If you merge your accounts, we’ll use information about how you use Oculus and Facebook for purposes such as:

  • Providing and improving your experience across Facebook products.
  • Promoting safety and integrity on our services.
  • Showing you personalized content, including ads, across Facebook products. This could include recommendations for Oculus Events you might like, ads about Facebook apps and technologies or ads from developers for their VR apps.

Can I have a VR profile that is different from my Facebook profile?

If you already have a unique username from your Oculus account, you will be able to continue using that username in VR. For example: you might be Monique Smith on Facebook, but WarriorMama365 in VR.

If you don’t have a VR username, you’ll be able to create one when you set up your profile for VR.

If I previously logged into Oculus using my Facebook account, can I choose not to merge my Oculus and Facebook accounts?

Yes. If you choose not to merge your accounts, you will no longer be logged in with Facebook on Oculus, and you’ll lose access to Facebook-powered social features. As we update and launch new features, some of these features won't be available to you.

If I previously logged in with Facebook and choose not to merge my Facebook account and Oculus account, what happens to the information from my use of social features on Oculus, like my friend list and chats?

If you previously logged in with your Facebook account and choose to log out of Facebook instead of merging your Facebook and Oculus accounts, we will keep data from your use of social features for 90 days. If you then log back into the Oculus platform with your Facebook account within 90 days of logging out, you will be able to restore information about your use of social features.

If I choose not to merge my Oculus account with my Facebook account, will my Oculus activity be used to inform advertising on other Meta products?

No. If you are an existing user and you choose not to merge your Oculus account and Facebook account, we won't use information related to your use of Oculus and Facebook to show you personalized content, including ads, across Meta products.

However, subject to your marketing preferences, we use information related to your use of Oculus devices to send you promotional messages and content about Oculus devices, games and related experiences. We also use this information to measure how people respond to our marketing efforts.

What happens to Oculus accounts after Jan. 1, 2023?

In 2023, we’ll end support for Oculus accounts. If you choose not to merge your accounts at that time, you can continue using your device, but full functionality will require a Facebook account. We’ll take steps to allow you to keep using content you have purchased, though we expect some games and apps may no longer work. This could be because they include features that require a Facebook account or because a developer has chosen to no longer support the app or game you purchased.

All future-unreleased Oculus devices will require a Facebook account, even if you already have an Oculus account.
