Setting up your Meta Quest headset

Charge your headset

To start, plug the charging cord into your Meta Quest headset and a power source to begin charging it. The charging indicator turns green once it's fully charged. If you haven't already charged your Meta Quest , we recommend keeping your headset connected to power while it runs the initial updates.

Download the Oculus mobile app and create your account

If you're new to Meta, or using Meta Quest, a Facebook account is required to use your device, apps and the app store. You can create a Facebook account by tapping “Sign Up” on the first screen of the device setup process in the Oculus mobile app.

Adjust your headset fit and view

  1. To start, you'll want to gently adjust the lenses by shifting them left, then right until they click into the position that allows you to see what's on the screen most clearly.
  2. Next, adjust the side straps. To do this, move the two sliders on either side of the top strap.
    • To loosen the side straps, move the sliders toward the top strap. To tighten the side straps, move the sliders away from the top strap.
    • After you move the sliders, re-center the top strap between the sliders so that the two sides are equal, and the top strap is centered on your head when you put the headset on.
    • Keep in mind, you'll need to remove the headset from your head to re-adjust the side straps with the sliders.
  3. If you're wearing glasses, make sure to insert the glasses spacer. When you're ready to put the headset on, put it on from front to back.
  4. Place the headset on your head, then remove it and make any additional adjustments to the side straps as needed.
  5. Once you've got the side straps set, put your headset back on and adjust the top strap. You can adjust the top strap by pulling apart the velcro and re-attaching it so that your Meta Quest 2 rests lightly on your face and the picture is clear.
  6. You can fine tune your headset fit and clarity by gently moving the firm arms on either side of your Meta Quest 2 up and down to adjust the angle of the headset against your face.

Once your headset is adjusted, follow the instructions in-VR and in the Oculus mobile app to complete the setup process.

What’s the difference between turning my Meta Quest off and putting it to sleep?

When you’re not using your Meta Quest 2 or Meta Quest, it can either be put to sleep or turned off entirely.

Putting your headset to sleep

Putting your headset to sleep means that it will automatically “wake up” when it senses that the headset has been placed on someone’s head. When your headset is in sleep mode, power will still drain from the device, although much more slowly than when it’s in use.

You can put your headset to sleep by pressing the power button on your headset. You can wake it back up by placing the headset on your head.

Turning your headset off

Turning your headset off means that the system is completely off, and will only turn on when the power button is held. When your headset is turned off, much less power will be drained than if it were in sleep mode.

You can turn your Meta Quest 2 off by holding down the power button for at least three seconds until the indicator light turns off.

What's IPD and how do I adjust it on my Meta Quest headset?

Two terms that are often used when talking about headset adjustments and clarity are “IPD” and “lens spacing.”

  • IPD stands for Inter Pupillary Distance, or simply put, the distance between your pupils.
  • Lens spacing refers to the distance between the clearest spots on the two lenses inside your headset.

To achieve the best image clarity, lens spacing should line up with your IPD as much as possible. Meta Quest 2 headsets best accommodate IPDs between 56 and 70 mm, or about 95% of adults.

Finding your IPD

If you're not sure what your IPD is, the best way to ensure the most accurate measurement is to visit an optometrist.

You can also estimate your IPD using a mirror and a millimeter ruler. It's easier to have a friend measure it for you, but you can measure it yourself following these steps:

  1. Stand in front of a mirror and hold a ruler above your eyes.
  2. Closing one eye, line the end of the ruler over your open eye, centered on your pupil.
  3. Without moving the ruler, open your closed eye and place your finger over the ruler in line with your pupil. Read the millimeter measurement under your finger to get an estimate for your IPD.

Adjusting Meta Quest 2 IPD

To change the lens spacing on your Meta Quest, gently adjust the lenses by shifting them together or apart. There are three lens spacing settings for Meta Quest 2.

If you know your IPD, the table below shows which lens spacing setting we suggest.

IPD RangeLens Spacing Setting
61 mm or smaller 1 (narrowest, 58 mm)
61 mm to 66 mm2 (middle, 63mm)
66mm or larger 3 (widest, 68mm)

Keep in mind that these are only suggestions, particularly if your IPD is on or near the edge of each lens spacing setting’s suggested range. The best setting for you can depend on numerous factors, including things that can change with each use, like where a piece of content has you directing your gaze or how the headset is positioned on your face when you put it on. Don't hesitate to try a different lens spacing setting to see if it improves image clarity for you.

Adjusting Meta Quest IPD

To change the IPD on your Meta Quest, gently move the slider on the bottom left side of the headset from the left to the right.

How do I wear glasses while using my Meta Quest 2?

Your Meta Quest 2 or Meta Quest comes with a glasses spacer in the box for wearing glasses while using the headset. Before installing the glasses spacer, check to make sure the width and height of your frames are the following sizes:

  • Width: 142mm or less
  • Height: 50mm or less

Once you've made sure your glasses are the right size, insert the glasses spacer into your headset to provide a larger fit.

Note: If your frames are too large for the included glasses spacer, you can shop online for third party glasses spacers or prescription lens inserts for your headset.

To insert the eyeglass spacer:

  1. Gently remove the facial interface foam from your headset.
  2. Take the glasses spacer that came with your headset, and attach it to your headset by pressing it into place where your facial interface foam just was.
  3. Re-insert the facial interface foam back into place on top of the glasses spacer.

When you put on your headset with glasses, put it on from front to back. When you remove your headset, pull it forward and then take it off.

How much space do I need to use my Meta Quest headset?

To use Roomscale, a Guardian setting that lets you move around inside your play area, you'll need a safe and unobstructed space measuring at least 6.5 feet by 6.5 feet (2 meters by 2 meters). If you have a smaller space than that, you can still use your headset in Stationary Mode, which lets you play while sitting or standing in one place.

Using Touch controllers

Your Touch controllers are a pair of tracked controllers that give you hand presence — the feeling that your virtual hands are actually your own. Touch controllers feature traditional action buttons, thumb-sticks and analog triggers that add familiarity to new experiences.

Here's a few examples of what the Touch controller buttons can do:

  • Thumbsticks navigate your virtual environment.
  • Trigger (on the front of the controller), and buttons select objects in your environment.
  • and buttons return you to the previous screen or menu.
  • Oculus button brings up the universal menu. You can also press and hold to recenter your headset view.
  • Grip button (on the side of the controller) grabs objects or makes a fist when using your virtual hands.
  • button brings up the menu inside apps and experiences.
  • You can press any button to wake the controllers after you turn on your headset.

Note: Individual apps may include their own tutorials for how to use the buttons on your Touch controllers.
